Ruolo significativo dell'HSS nel taglio dei metalli

In Metal cutting, HSS tools have gradually been replaced in many applications; however, they are still widely used in some specific segments such as drills, reamers, taps, form turning tools, gear hobbing and gear shaping cutters, side and face mills, end mills, slab and straddle milling cutters, slitting saws, form milling cutters and broaches

Il vantaggio dell'HSS rispetto al metallo duro è la sua resistenza alle forze di taglio e il basso costo degli utensili. Dal punto di vista della durata dell'utensile, l'HSS si comporta molto bene nelle applicazioni di taglio intermittente. Ma il limite maggiore dell'HSS è che la sua gamma di velocità di taglio utilizzabile è molto inferiore rispetto al metallo duro.

Nella stragrande maggioranza delle applicazioni di taglio, ovvero la tornitura, l'alesatura e la spianatura, gli utensili e gli inserti in metallo duro hanno quasi del tutto soppiantato gli utensili in HSS, che si sono praticamente estinti in queste applicazioni. Ma questo non per quanto riguarda la foratura.
